News from The Town Manager

Harvest is now nearing an end, and school is back in session. I just want to take a minute to make you aware of some things that will be going on in the next few weeks.

As most dog owners are aware, the State of Maine requires that all dogs 6 months old or older must be licensed by January 1st of each year. Please be advised that we are now able to license dogs for the year 2012. At the time of registration, please bring with you the old license, proof of rabies vaccination, and proof the dog is spayed or neutered, if that is the case. For your information, please note the following fees: $6 for each dog that is spayed or neutered and $11 for each dog that is not spayed or neutered. In addition to the annual license fee, a $25 late fee maybe charged to all dogs after January 31st. If you have any questions regarding dog licensing, please give us a call at the town office. We will also be hosting a rabies clinic here at the firestation again this year. Please see the details regarding date, time, fee’s etc, in Lisa’s portion of the issue.

As I am sure you are aware, on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 there will be a State Referendum Election. The polls will be open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM on that date at the Civic Center. Sample ballots are currently available at the town office for anyone who is interested. For those of you who will be out of town or otherwise unable to come to the pols on November 8th, please remember you have the option of voting by absentee ballot. Due to a recent change in the law, absentee voting is no longer allowed after the third day prior to the election. Therefore, the last day that you will be able to vote absentee is on Thursday, November 3rd, unless there is a special circumstances for which you qualify. Just call or stop by the town offices and we will assist you in exercising your right to vote. Also, just to clarify some confusion regarding same day voter registration, nothing has changed yet, so this year you may still register to vote on election day.

Please note the town offices will be closed on Friday, November 11, 2011, in observance of Veteran’s Day. The November town council meeting will be held on Monday, November 14, 2011, at 7:00PM at the Civic Center. As usual, please feel free to attend.

We would like to pass along word that we still have available for purchase the “Washburn 150 Years of Memories” books. A big thank you goes out to Liouse Cole and Londa Brown. for all the time and effort that went into making this book possible. The purchase price is $20 if you pick up the book at the town offices and $25 if you want the book mailed to you. The books are available at the town office during all business hours. This book would make a great Christmas gift.

In closing, I would like to wish you all a nice fall and a Happy Thanksgiving!

Bev Turner,

Town Manager

My family moved from Washburn to Brewer, ME 45 years ago this summer, but I have followed the Lady Beavers basketball team throughout their latest championship run. I return to my old hometown every summer for the annual August Festival and would love to see the team honored with a place in the parade! Thanks, and best wishes for continued success!!
